💼 April 2025: Big Changes for Cleaning Businesses – What You Really Need to Know

It’s April 2025 — a brand new tax year — and if you’re in the cleaning game, you’ll want to pay attention. Big changes are already shaking up how we run cleaning businesses in the UK.
Here’s everything you need to know, explained in plain English.
📈 Minimum Wage Has Gone Up
The National Minimum Wage for anyone aged 21 or over is now:
£12.21 per hour
Sounds okay, right?
But if you run a business and employ people, you’re not just paying £12.21/hour. You’ve got loads of extra costs on top.
🧾 What You Actually Pay to Employ Someone
Here’s what a cleaner can really cost you per hour when you include everything:
£12.21 – base wage
National Insurance
Pension contributions
Holiday pay
Sick pay (especially now it starts from day 1!)
Cleaning products
Petrol or mileage
Travel time between jobs
Wear and tear on kit
Admin time, insurance, and software
💰 Total hourly cost? Roughly £20.01 per hour
So if you're charging £21 an hour… you're barely scraping £1 profit — before tax, cancellations, or other overheads.
⚠️ Sick Pay Starts Sooner Now
As of April 2025:
Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) starts from day one
Before, you didn’t have to pay until day four
Now, if your employee calls in sick, you’re covering it straight away
This makes managing costs and staffing even more important.
💷 Want to Earn £1,500 or £2,000 a Month?
Let’s say you’re a solo cleaner working for yourself and charging £21/hour.
Here’s how many clients you need to hit your income goals:
To earn £1,500 a month – you need 18 two-hour clients per week
To earn £2,000 a month – you need 24 two-hour clients per week
This is assuming you’re working consistently, and your clients aren’t cancelling or ghosting you!
💡 Real Talk: Profit Over Busy-ness
You can be:
Fully booked
Running around every day
Charging a “decent” hourly rate...
...and still making next to nothing.
Because if you don’t know your profit margins, you don’t know your business.
Running a proper business means:
Knowing your numbers
Pricing to cover everything
Building systems that support you
Having a plan — not just a calendar full of jobs
